2010 End of Year Report
Dear friends of Living Hope Haiti Christian Mission:
2010 was one of the most difficult years that the Haitian people have experienced in a long time. The people of this beautiful island got three strikes: the January 12th earthquake, Hurricane Tomas, and Cholera. Hundreds of thousands were killed. Yet, the people did not strike out. They are still in the game after three strikes because of the grace of God manifested through your prayers and your generosity. No Christian organization benefits from the suffering of God’s people, rather it is an occasion to use God’s resources to remediate His people’s lives, show His love, and make Him known. We at Living Hope are pleased to report to you this is what we have done.
When the year started, we at Living Hope set a goal to serve 1,500 children a daily meal (which may be their only meal for the day); provide a Christian education to those 1,500 kids who otherwise would have not gone to school; provide care to pregnant women who would have faced the possibility of dying when delivering; helping farmers increase the yield of their harvest by providing sugar cane and corn grinders; creating jobs through small business; providing skills to young people through our technical school, and advancing the gospel of Jesus Christ as we train leaders through our theological Seminary and saving souls as we proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ through radio programs and churches.
However, the tragedies of the year challenged us to serve those we did not budget for, to preach the message we did not prepare for, to travel on trips we did not schedule, sing the song of hope that we did not practice for the suffering people of Haiti, and to welcome to our schools the non registered students who left Port-au-Prince due to the earthquake. We did all of this with love and grace, for we are called to serve. After all, we have learned why Christian Mission principles cannot be substituted with secular business principles. In the Mission Field often we are called to act beyond what was budgeted for. Because what we do beyond the budget is not against the nature of the mission field, as the owner and the chairman of the board, our Lord Jesus Christ, always votes for more!
Dear friends and supporters, I come to report to you, your children were fed, the homeless who came to Living Hope were sheltered, health care was provided to those left to die after the earthquake, computers were repaired by young Haitians, strong Habitat homes were built, a couple more businesses are better managed because of the training received at our technical school, and more souls have been saved.
I am reminded of a young man who was picking up leaves in his fathers’ yard. After cleaning up the yard, he called his dad to come and see how he finished cleaning up the whole yard. His dad came and said: son, congratulations, job well done! By the way, I forget to tell you your mom and I just bought another house yesterday. I hope you will do as well a job cleaning it too.
Although we helped many women, men, children, orphans, young, and old through different ministries of Living Hope Haiti Christian Mission, like the father of this young man, our Lord said to all of us: “Congratulations! Job well done! By the way, I have more than 1500 children who would love to learn their ABCs, more pregnant women to be saved, more orphans who are crying for a home. Budget for more this year, and be ready to travel the unscheduled medical trip, to serve unbudgeted meals, to pray the unprepared prayer- for this is the nature of the mission field.”
On behalf of all those we are serving, I thank you very sincerely and wish you a happy new year.
