WELCOME MESSAGE
Welcome to Living Hope Haiti Christian Mission. We are a 501 (C)(3) charitable organization that serves the greater St. Michel area of Northern Haiti. Living Hope Haiti Christian Mission exists to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of Northern Haiti (St. Michel area) through education and medical services.
Haiti is widely recognized as the poorest country in the entire Western Hemishphere. More than 80% of the population lives in abject poverty and more than 70% of the people are unemployed. The United Nations has designated Haiti the 3rd hungriest country in the world with more than 40% of the rural population being malnourished.
Please look around and see the many aspects of our mission. We are excited about the work God is accomplishing for the Kingdom and hope that you will see the passion in which we work.

CAMATHE CLINIC
Living Hope Haiti Christian Mission has three Medical Clinics.
The Living Hope Haiti Medical Clinic at Camathe was opened in July 2003, and our physician started full time in August. We also have a head nurse and two assistant nurses on staff. Due to the severe medical needs in the area patients often are kept overnight turning the clinic into a small hospital. Even with just the basic medical equipment and medicines we are saving lives.
LACIDE CLINIC
The Living Hope Haiti Medical Clinic at Lacide is currently under construction.
L'ATTAYLE CLINIC
The Living Hope Haiti Medical Clinic at L'Attayle is coming soon.
L'ATTALAYE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Mary Babcock Christian Elementary School of L'Attalaye
There is a Haitian Saying, "Kote Gen kou pa gen kolye" which means where there is means there isn't needs. This can be used to describe the village of L'Attalaye. With more than 2,000 kids in need to go to school about only 200 can afford to go to the small state school. The rest and their parents want to be in school but there is no school to go to.
Because of our school, kids and parents in L'Attalaye are now saying, "Kote gen kou kolye" where there is need there is means. In L'Attalaye kids come to learn and they come to eat.

In the village of Camethe, just west of the northern city of Saint-Michel de Attalaye, there is no water or electricity. There was on mediocre elementary school that taught 200 children, yet an estimated 2,000 children ages 5 to 12 live in the village. Living Hope's first endeavor was to provide more of this village's needy children with an excellent education.
With this desire in mind, our first school opened in Camathe in October 2002. The thre classroom building is on six acres of land, nicely landscaped and attractive. A well has been dug on the site for use by the school and the villagers. Children are provided with a daily lunch, and receive annual health screenings.
Life is a constant struggle for survival in Haiti. In this daily struggle, education has taken a back seat, as few parents can afford to send their children to private schools and public schools are not available. Most children currently work on farms or help their parents at flea markets, in lieu of getting an education.
The school's French-based curriculum is taught by qualified teachers and not only provides the 750 elementary-aged students an excellent educational foundation, but also provides them with a greater possibility of continuing their studies at a secondary level.

MEDICAL TEAM
In August 17 through 20 of 2006 the surgical team completed 43 procedures on 34 people- half from St Michel area where Living Hope is, and half from the local area around Double Harvest (the mission that has the operating room). Our team was comprised of two surgeons, one anesthesiologist, two CRNAs, and eight nurses and OR techs, and two support people.
The folks from St Michel drove 12 hours in our school bus, bringing Pastor Edner and Dr. John (our clinic doctor) and several ladies to cook for the entire crew.
Some of the medical conditions that we treated were horrendous. To accomplish 34 surgeries in two days, the team started early, worked fast, and worked late. Everyone's attitude was incredible-there were no complaints about the workload at all. All of the surgeries were very successful.
Our second surgical trip to Haiti (Nov 16-19) was an incredible success. We took three Baptist Hospital Surgeons and operated on 48 patients in two and half days. Some of the medical condition were incredibly bad - the entire team (20 people) was delighted to be able to help some of the people that Jesus referred to as "the least of these". Tim Hawkins, an executive at Baptist, organizes all of the people and details for these surgical trips.
One of the surgeons ( Harvard trained) Dr. Michael Canning, emailed me two days after the trip: "Haiti was a life-changing experience for me. Our lives here are so rich and we have so much to be thankful for."
A three year old little girl came into the clinic on 11/18 with a huge abscess on her abdominal wall. The physicians were convinced that she would die in 48 hours without surgery. They operated on her with excellent results. She is expected to make a full recovery.

We took another surgical team to Haiti in January. It was a good trip, as we took a dentist and a couple of physicians to do an offsite clinic in addition to our surgery. All of the teams were successful, and loved by the Haitian citizens.
Other Highlights:
We have acquired the land to start our first Habitat for Humanity development. It is over an acre of land, and will be the home to roughly 20 families when we are finished.
The vocational school computer classes were filled quickly. Currently, the students are studying basic computing. We hope to have internet access (via satellite) installed in the future, and use this access to expand the curriculum and start an internet café. Even in the Third World, people will pay to use the internet. And we can provide a couple of jobs in the process. The vocational school also has classes in construction, electricity, and sewing.
I have attached some photos: Going clockwise from the upper left: a burn victim (bakery accident) who walked to our surgery location- the surgical team most likely saved his life. He is wrapped up prior to surgery. Next: A man with a large benign bump on his arm- he was delighted when we removed it. If it was a little lower, it would have looked like a huge bicep! Next: Our computer classroom at the vocational school. Lastly: Kelly Lumenes, who is coming to Miami to have the tumor removed from his face. The tumor will end his life in the next three months without surgery.
It is a blessing to be able to help some of Gods children in this manner. If you would like to support the cost of Kellys care, or any of our ministries, please do so!
As always, we welcome your prayers and support for all of the above! Thank you!
APRIL 2008 NEWSLETTER
We traveled to Haiti April 8- 11 with Rev Dr Dorcinvil and my mother. We had a good trip, even though there were demonstrations in Haiti that week over the price of food.
Here are the highlights of where we stand:
1. Our schools continue to do well academically. Mom spoke to most of the students at our morning opening exercises. Our churches, which meet in the school buildings at night and on the weekends, are doing well. The largest one, in Camathe, is interested in building a separate Church building, as they are getting too large for the school facility.
2. The construction of the road to Lacide is progressing well. Our bulldozer is still operating, and we have hired thirty masons and laborers for the project. The success of the venture will be based on our ability to acquire rock and sand for the low parts of the road at an affordable price.
3. We are moving forward with finishing the construction of the fifth school in our system, which will be a multi-purpose vocational facility.
4. We have acquired the land for building 10 Habitat for Humanity style homes for working poor families in the St Michele area. We expect to start the homes in the Fall.
5. We are modifying our lunch program slightly to make the donated rice/soy meals from Feed My Starving Children last as long as possible.
I took a video of the trip, and it is available for your viewing at YouTube. Simply go to www.YouTube.com and search for Mary Babcock. For those of you who know and love my mom, you will get a kick out of seeing the video of her riding on a motorcycle in Haiti.
We welcome your prayers for all of the above activities, as well as for our next surgical trip scheduled for June 12- 15. As always, thank you for your support!
OCTOBER 2008 NEWSLETTER
We have been busy in Haiti since our last report in May! We took surgical teams to Haiti in June and September. Both were outstanding. Two of the patients in September would have died within a week without the surgical team being there. One was a 20 yr old with a ruptured appendix.
1.The old school year ended in June with our test scores again being the highest in the area. The start of the new school year was delayed until Oct 6 due to the flooding and mudslides from several tropical storms. We started paying our teachers in September to help them survive during the delay.
2.None of our facilities received any damage from the storms, but parts of the country were devastated, and are still trying to dig out from all the mud.
3.We will be sending a storm relief team to distribute food and conduct medical clinics in Gonaives in the next two weeks. Please pray for them, as crowd control can be very difficult and chaotic.
4.Our Vocational school opening has been delayed until November. When it opens, the curriculum of electrical, mechanical, practical business and sewing classes will be a great blessing to the community of St Michele.
5.We have decided to become a distributor of food for Feed My Starving Children, a Christian food ministry based in Minnesota. We hope to bring in a container (120,000 meals) per month into Northern Haiti, and give it to hungry school kids. The food is free, but the shipping will cost us roughly $9,000 per container.
6.We have decided to start an orphanage close to our headquarter complex, with 6 kids and good house parents. Many more kids in the future.
7.The other projects that we are working on: road repair continues, our Habitat homes should start soon, Church plants are doing well, seminary classes continue, and our trash pickup program will start in January.
We welcome your prayers and support for all of the above! Thank you!
